Hong Kong woman killed, 5 others injured in car crash in Japan’s Hokkaido
Car crash has become second such accident in Hokkaido prefecture to involve city residents in less than a week
A 53-year-old Hong Kong woman died and five others were injured in a head-on car crash in Japan on Monday, becoming the second such accident in Hokkaido prefecture to involve city residents in less than a week.
Japanese news outlets reported that the incident took place at around 3.30pm (Japan Standard Time) on National Route 38 in Furano.
A rental car carrying a family of four from Hong Kong crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with another passenger vehicle carrying two Japanese nationals, according to media reports.
The Hong Kong group included a 52-year-old man at the wheel, the deceased woman – who was in the front passenger seat – and two teenage girls sitting in the back. The couple in the other car, a man and a woman in their twenties, were also injured in the accident.
Local police are investigating why the rental car crossed into oncoming traffic.
The crash occurred along a route that connects the cities of Takikawa, Akabira and Furano, which is commonly used by tourists.
