Berlin Election: Giffey Fails to Win Seat in House of Representatives
Former Berlin Governing Mayor Giffey has missed out on the direct mandate in her constituency. The SPD politician is therefore no longer a member of the House of Representatives. She was narrowly overtaken by her CDU rival.
Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs and former Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) failed to win a direct mandate in the House of Representatives election, missing out on a seat in parliament. In constituency Neukölln 6, she narrowly lost to CDU candidate Olaf Schenk, who received 27.7 percent of the first votes. After all voting areas were counted, Giffey received 26.3 percent. Giffey was not secured a place on the Berlin SPD's state list.
Evers, Krach, Brinker and Spranger Enter House of Representatives Only via Party List
CDU lead candidate Stefan Evers in constituency Treptow-Köpenick 4 and Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) in Marzahn-Hellersdorf 2 also failed to win direct mandates. However, both are secured places on their parties' district lists and will nevertheless enter the House of Representatives. SPD lead candidate Steffen Krach also missed out on his direct mandate in constituency Steglitz-Zehlendorf 2. He finished only in third place behind Tom Cywinski (CDU) and Daniel Eliasson (Greens), according to results from the state returning officer. AfD parliamentary group leader and lead candidate for the mayoral race, Kristin Brinker, finished only in fifth place in her constituency in Steglitz-Zehlendorf 1. There, Tonka Wojahn of the Greens won.
Eralp Wins Direct Mandate Clearly – Wegner Re-elected
The Left Party's lead candidate Elif Eralp was clearly elected directly in constituency Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg 1 with 50.4 percent of the first votes. Berlin's still-incumbent Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) was re-elected in his constituency Spandau 5, though with a significantly worse result than in 2023: he lost 11.2 percent but still achieved 32.7 percent of the first votes. Wegner's partner and still-serving Senator for Education Katharina Günther-Wünsch (also CDU) was also directly elected. She received 31.6 percent of first votes in her constituency Marzahn-Hellersdorf 5.
Lead Candidates Fail to Enter Parliament
BSW lead candidate Alexander King will also not enter the House of Representatives. His party failed to clear the threshold for entering parliament with 4.7 percent, and King was also unable to win a direct mandate in his constituency Tempelhof-Schöneberg 6. The same applies to the FDP's lead candidate: Christoph Meyer missed out on a direct mandate in his constituency Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf 5. The FDP received only 6.0 percent of first votes. The party will also not enter the House of Representatives, having received just 2.5 percent of second votes.
