Oil Refinery Hit: Ukraine Attacks Moscow Region with Drones
At least two people have been killed in Russia following Ukrainian attacks involving hundreds of drones. A refinery was hit in the Moscow region. Several people also died in Russian attacks.
Russian authorities say two people were killed in one of the most severe Ukrainian drone attacks to date on the Moscow Oblast. An oil refinery in the Russian capital was also struck. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, air defenses intercepted more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, of which 450 had been directed at Moscow. There were no casualties in the capital itself.
In the surrounding area, residential buildings were damaged. In the Ramenskoye district, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said 400 people, including 70 children, had to be evacuated from a 21-story apartment building. Eyewitnesses told the Reuters news agency of explosions and clouds of smoke above the Moscow refinery. The extent of the damage to the facility was initially unclear.
Further Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Ukraine is thus continuing its attacks on the opponent's energy infrastructure. US President Donald Trump had announced as recently as Monday that both sides had agreed to end such strikes. The repeated Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have already led to shortages of oil products and rising fuel prices in Russia.
The Moscow facility that was now hit processed around 11.6 million tons of oil in 2024. No statement from the government in Kyiv was initially available. Both sides consistently emphasize that they do not target civilians.
The attack on the Moscow Oblast occurred on the final day of the Russian parliamentary elections. Moscow Mayor Sobyanin described it as an unprecedented attack that was clearly aimed at disrupting the vote. "The adversary did not achieve this," he stated on the messaging service Telegram.
Renewed Attacks on Kyiv Region
Russia has also continued its attacks in Ukraine. Four people were killed in attacks on the Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian authorities, among them three children. A mother and her two three-year-old children were killed when a Russian drone struck a residential building, emergency services reported.
Another girl died in hospital following a separate drone attack, Governor Tymur Tkachenko of the Kyiv region announced. In total, 31 locations in five districts were damaged during the attacks, which lasted more than 24 hours, Tkachenko added. The southwestern Fastiv district was the worst affected.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a warehouse belonging to Ukrainian drone and missile manufacturer Fire Point in the Kyiv region was among the targets of the attacks. A cargo ship in the port of Odessa and a postal logistics center in the Odessa region were also struck. The ministry stated that these had been used for military transport.
