Three children have been injured when a school bus crashed into a railway bridge, police have said.

Gwent Police said it received a report of a collision in Tregare Street, Newport, at about 07:45 BST on Tuesday.

The pupils' injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, the force said, but the children have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the scene, and the road remains closed with diversions in place.

Transport for Wales said delays to train services were expected to last until about 11:00, with some services cancelled in both directions between Newport and Hereford.

Newport council confirmed the bus was a service for Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh‑medium secondary school on Duffryn Way, Newport.

The council said it was working closely with emergency service colleagues and its priority was "ensuring the well-being of those involved in the collision".

Transport for Wales said the bus hit a bridge at Maindee West between Newport and Cwmbran, meaning trains cannot run over the bridge until the line is inspected.
