A Bit of Light (original title: Kami Nour; international title: A Bit of Light), the new film by Ali Asgari, one of the most authoritative voices in contemporary Iranian cinema and in competition at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, will be released in Italian cinemas on 1 October. Produced for Italy by Zoe Films, the film is the Iranian director's sixth feature-length work — he is already the acclaimed author of Divine Comedy and Kafka in Tehran — and was shot under particularly difficult circumstances, with the onset of war and the constant threat of bombardment.
The film tells the story of an Iranian doctor who, after being arrested and seeing his clinic shut down, loses faith in the future. Determined to take his own life, he spends one last day visiting his brother, sisters and mother to prepare them for his decision. The compassion and affection of his family members will ultimately lead him to reconcile with the world.
"I have often asked myself: when suffering becomes an integral part of our daily lives, what gives life its value?" says director Ali Asgari. "Can we ever separate our existence from that of others? Are our choices truly ours alone, or do they leave traces in the hearts and memories of those around us? Living in Iran, where economic hardship, political uncertainty and the constant shadow of war have become part of everyday life, I have seen how people continue to resist, to care for one another and to create small moments of hope. Perhaps what allows us to keep going is not the absence of suffering, but the invisible bonds that unite us, the sense that our existence is intertwined with that of others."
