Another meeting between Milei and Netanyahu is being planned during his trip to New York, where he will address the United Nations

Javier Milei will depart this Monday night for New York, where on Wednesday the 23rd he will deliver his third speech as President before the United Nations General Assembly.

A message to the chamber is expected outlining his new agenda on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, a matter that has been present as state policy in the speeches of all Argentine heads of state. He will probably, sources close to him say with a hint of suspicion, thank Donald Trump for his statements on the conflict, which are somewhat favorable to Argentina.

Milei will speak on the morning of this Wednesday. He holds the 11th speaking slot among heads of state, between Nigeria (10) and Estonia (11). And as every year, the Assembly will be opened by the president of Brazil, in this case Lula da Silva, and Trump, the host.

Milei will have a compact and therefore packed agenda, including meetings with business leaders on one hand, and members of the Jewish community on the other, as he typically does when traveling to New York.

According to information obtained by Clarín, the Presidency is organizing his fifth formal bilateral meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, who sees in the libertarian one of his most loyal allies, at a time when he continues to face strong international criticism for his hardline policy toward the civilian population of Gaza and Lebanon, in the context of the war against terrorism that Milei supports without reservation. That meeting does not formally appear on the agenda released by the Casa Rosada at the last minute, though the statement clarified that "additional activities or meetings are expected, currently in the process of confirmation."

Meanwhile, the Argentine ambassador in Washington, Alec Oxenford, is racing against the clock to secure the possibility of a new meeting with Trump, which at this point is complicated given that the Republican will be hosting more than one hundred leaders and representatives converging on New York.

Oxenford praised on X this week the deregulatory approach to artificial intelligence proposed by Trump, who is now at odds with the precautions sought by some tech CEOs and amid warnings that control failures could affect humanity.

The high-stakes battle over the final text of the declaration that G20 leaders must agree upon at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, in mid-December is fast approaching. By then, Milei would be completing his twentieth trip to the United States, where he will also be on October 5th (in Washington) campaigning for Trump ahead of the November midterm elections.

Speeches and meetings

Upon arriving on Tuesday, Milei will deliver a speech at the educational institution Yeshiva Darchei Torah and present the "Ohev Yisrael" award. He will also hold a meeting with Mexican-born analyst and businessman Roberto Salinas, and another with Spanish-born American economist Xavier Sala i Martín, a neoliberal advocate of globalization who studies economic growth processes.

At noon on Wednesday, Milei will speak before the iconic hall of the UN General Assembly, with the Argentine delegation led by Karina Milei, his sister and general secretary, and Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno.

Afterwards, he will speak at the conference "Western Values, Economic Freedom & Strategic Security," organized by the Fundación Federalismo y Libertad with the support of the International Republican Institute (IRI). At 6 p.m., he will meet with major business leaders, partners of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas. Around 12 to 15 executives will participate, and the well-known head of these meetings, Susan Segal, will be in attendance.

Although no schedule has been set for the meeting with Netanyahu, it could take place during one of the activities with New York's Jewish community.

There will be a meeting with Hasidic rabbi Simón Jacobson, author of the bestseller "Toward a Meaningful Life: The Wisdom of the Rebbe," of which the libertarian is a devoted fan. Jacobson told him in 2023 that "God had chosen him to be a world leader."

On November 29, the first direct flight from Tel Aviv to Buenos Aires will take off, with two routes per week. Argentina's ambassador to Israel, Axel Wahnish, and the now former Israeli ambassador to Buenos Aires, Eyal Sela, worked hard on that direct flight, and discussions are also underway about the possibility of signing scientific and university agreements with Israel. Furthermore, they are seeking to have Milei, along with Santiago Peña of Paraguay and Abelardo De la Espriella of Colombia, join forces to launch an initiative to bring Latin America closer to Israel through the signing of what they have called the Isaac Accords, modeled after the Abraham Accords, through which Arab countries drew closer to Israel.

Trump is pressuring the British Labour Party over the Falklands. This pressure is based on his demands that London increase defense spending and support him in his Middle Eastern wars. And the United Kingdom, through its Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who is of Jewish origin, has demanded that Israel once and for all allow the existence of two states, one Hebrew and the other for Palestine. London called Israeli settlers who are advancing on the civilian population of the West Bank through acts of violence "terrorists."

However, neither Netanyahu nor the Israeli state has formally expressed a position on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Netanyahu's son Yair Netanyahu did so informally. At the same time, they avoid getting involved in the open conflict sparked by Argentina against the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, which plans along with the British firm Rockhopper to extract crude oil from the islands by 2028. These are companies subject to Argentine sanctions. It is a "private" and not state venture, they maintain in Israel.

The official agenda of President Milei does not include potential participation in the protocol cocktail reception for visiting heads of state to be held on Tuesday the 22nd. Trump's presence has not been confirmed either.

On Thursday, the only scheduled activity before his departure in the evening is a speech at The Economic Club of New York, at 1 p.m.

Kicillof in New York

The curiosity of Milei's trip to New York is that it will coincide with Axel Kicillof. The governor of Buenos Aires Province and potential rival of the libertarian in the 2027 presidential race will participate on Tuesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd in a meeting with investors, companies, and political leaders. His Chief of Government Minister, Carlos Bianco, will also attend a meeting at Columbia University.

On Wednesday, Kicillof will meet with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and will participate in a presentation at Columbia University's Institute of Latin American Studies on the economic and political transformations of Argentina and the region. At that event he will also be alongside the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who will speak, as will Milei, before the United Nations.
