"It seems to me that a clear and very specific mandate is emerging: we must build paths to peace, with war we are going nowhere. Weapons push peace further away," said M5S president Giuseppe Conte from the Nova stage. "There is a need to invest where the real needs of citizens, families and businesses lie, no to a war economy, no to rearmament," he added. "At the moment of greatest suffering for the country, we created the foundations to build together workshops of hope, nurseries, schools, to strengthen research, universities and innovation, not workshops of war and arsenals full of weapons."
"This mandate honours me and makes me feel responsible, and I will seek to fulfil it with the utmost determination, firmness and clarity – do not think I am willing to water it down," Conte explained, speaking of the mandate given to him through the twenty-point programme that the former prime minister will have to bring to the centre-left coalition table. "Do not think I am willing to dilute it so that everything becomes a matter of drifting and muddling through in politics," he concluded. "You know me."
