The Golden Light Meter Memorial Award of the 31st International 'Di Venanzo' Prize goes to Witold and Piotr Sobocinski, father and son and among the most important Polish cinematographers, who made their mark in European cinema and in Hollywood. Receiving the award, on Saturday, October 10th in Teramo, will be Piotr Jr. and Michal Sobocinski, the grandson and son respectively of the two masters being honoured.
The award will be presented as part of the closing ceremony of the prize organised by the cultural association Teramo Nostra, with a jury chaired by Stefano Masi.
Witold Sobocinski (1929-2018), a long-standing collaborator of Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski, with whom he worked on, among other films, 'Pirates' and 'Frantic', was a defining figure of Polish cinematography. His visual style, characterised by particular dynamism and rhythm, also drew on his experience as a jazz musician.
His son Piotr Sobocinski (1958-2002) carried on his legacy, establishing himself in turn at the highest international levels. His work includes 'Dekalog' and 'Three Colours: Red' by Krzysztof Kieślowski. His cinematography also earned him an Academy Award nomination. His career came to a premature end in 2002, when he died in Hollywood during the production of a film.
