Mumbai: The Bombay City Civil and Sessions Court Bar Association on July 24 passed a resolution strongly condemning the alleged use of force by police against students and young protestors who had gathered peacefully to raise concerns about the future of education. At an urgent meeting held at the Bar Association premises in the Old Secretariat Building, Mumbai, the association expressed “deep concern over reports and visuals” relating to police action against student protestors. The association said the students had assembled peacefully to voice grievances on an issue of public importance. The association noted “with grave concern” that videos and newspaper reports appeared to show “students being subjected to assault on lady students and protestors, lathi charge and the use of tear gas by the police.” The association said the use of force against students exercising constitutional rights was “deeply disturbing” and “cannot be countenanced in a society governed by the rule of law.” The Bar Association said law enforcement authorities are expected to act with “restraint, proportionality, and due regard to the constitutional rights and dignity of every citizen.” The association also referred to the right to peaceful protest and said such police action must meet constitutional standards of necessity and proportionality.
