More unstable weather and thunderstorms at the start of this week, before temperatures rise again, driven once more by the African anticyclone. The warm air mass will make its effects felt especially in the second half of the week, according to forecasts from Federico Brescia, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it.
"We will be facing a particularly intense heatwave," Brescia notes in a statement. The heat will also be felt at higher altitudes, with temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees above 1,500 metres. From Wednesday 29 July, ground-level temperatures are also forecast to peak at 36-38 degrees in the inland plains of central and northern Italy.
The first days of the week will nonetheless be marked by instability, with thunderstorms between Monday and Wednesday fuelled by a cold drop — a mass of cold air sitting at altitude over the lower Tyrrhenian Sea. The areas most exposed to this band of instability will be Sicily and the regions of the lower Tyrrhenian coast, where localised showers or afternoon thunderstorms may occur.
By mid-week, however, the African anticyclone will dominate, bringing clear or lightly cloudy skies, strong sunshine and gradually increasing humidity levels along coastal areas and plains. Temperatures are forecast above seasonal norms, in a phase of intense heat expected to last at least until 7 August.
In detail:
- Monday 27: sunny in the North; predominantly sunny in the Centre; thunderstorms from Campania towards Basilicata and Puglia in the South.
- Tuesday 28: sunshine everywhere in the North, rising temperatures; sunny across all areas in the Centre; sunny and warmer in the South, thunderstorms over the Palermo and Trapani areas.
- Wednesday 29: sunshine and heat in the North, instability over the Alps; sunshine and sharply rising heat in the Centre; generally lightly cloudy in the South, severe thunderstorms in Sicily.
