People keep talking about women and skirts. While Antonio Tajani would advise his son to choose a wife who wears a long skirt because she is "less showy and more reliable," Roberto Vannacci crosses the line by saying he would prefer her without one. "Between a woman with a long skirt and one with a short skirt, I always prefer her without a skirt," was his outburst during an interview on Start on Sky TG24.
The controversy sparked by the words of the Forza Italia minister and deputy prime minister — regarding the reliability of women who dress in a more eye-catching way and are therefore more likely to cheat on their partner — went on for days. Jokes, memes and protests led the Forza Italia secretary to apologise: "It was not my intention to offend them." Although a few days earlier, during a debate at the Itaca event in Formello, he had said: "There's a charming girl who has had several boyfriends, she dumped one of them, she's inclined to play around. And there's a more serious girl, less showy but more reliable, she'll be a good, faithful family mother. I tell my son: choose the second one," Tajani explained, "because the more charming one will cheat on you, whereas the second one, less pretty, with longer skirts than the other, is a more stable person. I always recommend the more reliable one."
Now Vannacci has seen fit to reignite the controversy: "Since the question is lighthearted, I'll answer in an equally lighthearted way — between a long skirt and a short skirt, I prefer no skirt at all." Trivialising a subject that has nevertheless deeply irritated a great many women.
