Disney's live-action version of Moana, directed by Thomas Kail and starring Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne Johnson, topped the weekend box office charts in Italy on its opening weekend, according to the Cinetel rankings. The film — released in cinemas ten years after the original animated version — inspired by Polynesian myths, earned 3,814,248 euros over five days, rising to 5,091,982 euros including previews, and was seen by 482,281 spectators (650,830 including previews), with a per-screen average of 7,170 euros.
Christopher Nolan's Odyssey drops to second place, with 2,062,443 euros over the weekend and a six-week total of 52,124,027 euros. Spider-Man: Brand New Day by Destin Daniel Cretton also falls one position, coming in third with 1,717,954 euros over the weekend and 34,984,349 euros over four weeks.
Fourth place goes to new entry Insidious: The Further Beyond, the new chapter in the supernatural horror saga directed by Jacob Chase and starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye, with 683,763 euros over five days, rising to 888,677 euros including previews. David Robert Mitchell's The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway, drops from third to fifth place, earning 271,911 euros over the weekend for a two-week total of 1,171,837 euros. Robin Hood - The Price of Blood, a darker reimagining of the story of the 'prince of thieves' directed by Michael Sarnoski and starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, also falls two places, from fourth to sixth: the film grossed 85,057 euros over the weekend for a two-week total of 443,516 euros.
Minions & Monsters slips from fifth to seventh place with 66,893 euros over the weekend and a cumulative eight-week total of 8,047,183 euros. Debuting in eighth place is the horror/black comedy Camp Miasma: Adolescence, Sex and Death by Jane Schoenbrun, winner of the Queer Palm at Cannes and starring the duo Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, with 59,709 euros over the weekend, rising to 76,452 euros including previews. The satirical adventure comedy Sacrifice, directed by Romain Gavras, climbs one place from tenth to ninth, earning 33,222 euros over the weekend for a two-week total of 92,657 euros. Rounding out the top ten in tenth place (down from sixth last week) is Damian McCarthy's supernatural horror Hokum, with 25,332 euros over the weekend and 776,209 euros over three weeks.
Total weekend box office receipts came to 9,194,044 euros, up by a full 50% compared to the 6,111,121 euros of last weekend, and representing a +178% increase compared to the 3,303,124 euros earned during the same period last year.
