"The trial will begin in September. My husband and I are living in anticipation of that day. We are waiting to look them in the eyes. We are waiting to see if they will have the courage to look us in the eyes. Now the desire for justice is stronger than the pain." This was said by Patrizia Mercolino, mother of little Domenico, who died following a heart transplant, on the sidelines of the press conference presenting her book today at the Chamber of Deputies.
She then recounted the most painful moments before the journalists. "No one has apologized to us. And if they did so now, it would be of no use. Because in recent months other things have come to light, and the further we go, the more emerge. That child was treated like a toy — he was not a human life."
"What was missing," she added, "was above all communication. I felt deceived. Making mistakes is human, but here they didn't just make mistakes — they hid everything from us and tried to cover it up. I am grateful to my son, who fought for 60 days attached to the ECMO machine, going beyond all expectations. And I am convinced he did it to make everything come out into the open. That is why we must press on."
