ARD Information: Hoppermann to become new CDU Secretary General
The current CDU treasurer Hoppermann is set to become the new CDU Secretary General. Chancellor Merz is said to have proposed her at a presidium meeting, according to sources among participants.
Federal MP and current CDU treasurer Franziska Hoppermann is set to become the new Secretary General of her party. Chancellor and party leader Friedrich Merz proposed her at a meeting of the CDU presidium, as the ARD capital studio learned from sources among participants. The news agency dpa had previously reported on this. The Hamburg native is expected to succeed Carsten Linnemann, who is set to become Federal Health Minister. Merz is expected to present the personnel decisions shortly at a press conference.
Hoppermann currently serves as Federal Treasurer of the CDU and is therefore also a member of the CDU presidium. The graduate in business administration has represented the Hamburg-Wandsbek constituency in the Bundestag since 2021. She is a member of the Budget Committee and the Committee on Digital Affairs and State Modernisation. She also chairs the Corona Inquiry Commission, which is intended to help better prepare Germany for potential pandemics.
In all parties, the party leader holds the right to propose candidates for the Secretary General position. With his choice of Hoppermann, Merz is strengthening the role of women in the CDU, where they remain underrepresented among members and in parliaments — despite the women's quota adopted by a federal party congress in 2022.
