"The cardiac surgeon who performed the transplant on Domenico would have deserved more stringent precautionary measures than a suspension from practice, or at the very least should have been suspended from his role as the child's attending physician immediately after the complaint was filed: in the order, the judge refers to 'a pattern of manipulation of the truth' in relation to the falsification of medical records, and I would like those demonstrating on his behalf to keep this aspect firmly in mind, as it cannot be considered a minor detail." This is the comment made by Francesco Petruzzi, lawyer for the family of Domenico Caliendo, the nearly two-and-a-half-year-old child who died as a result of a failed heart transplant, regarding the sit-in at which a group of parents yesterday expressed, among other things, their deep distress over the treatment reserved for doctor Guido Oppido.
"He was left free to attempt to falsify documents and to influence and steer his colleagues, and we," Petruzzi continued, "hope that he never practises medicine again. I hope these people understand the gravity of the acts he committed and stop defending him. It is a great source of pain for the mother who has lost a child," the lawyer for the Caliendo-Mercolino family continued, "that these people, by selfishly calling for the reinstatement of doctor Guido Oppido, show no sensitivity whatsoever towards the death of little Domenico, which in our view could also have been prevented after 23 December."
