Two dogs that had been reported missing
were rescued by firefighters in Rivoli, in the Turin area.
The two Jack Russells had ended up in a badger's den.
The operations centre had been alerted in the early hours of
yesterday. The owners themselves identified
the entrance to the den from which the two trapped dogs could be heard.
Attempts to call them back proving unsuccessful, the rescue
mechanism was activated and concluded this morning,
with the animals recovered and handed over to the veterinary service and their
owners.
Operations were complicated by the morphology of the
terrain and required an initial phase of instrumental investigation,
using acoustic and optical detectors,
aimed at identifying the animals' position underground. Only afterwards was it possible to operate with earth-moving
equipment to intercept the underground tunnels
and recover the two animals.
From the start of the operation, seven firefighter teams
took turns, comprising both permanent and volunteer personnel, for
a total of 21 units deployed.
