Marquee with accumulated water collapses and leaves two injured on Faria Lima, in the west zone of SP

Two people were injured after a canopy with accumulated water collapsed on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, in Pinheiros, in the western zone of São Paulo, on the morning of this Tuesday (22). One victim suffered a head injury and the other sustained open fractures in the leg.

The Fire Department reported it was dispatched at 6:54 a.m. The collapse occurred in the interior area of a condominium and did not cause any closures on the avenue.

The victim with the head injury was taken to Hospital das Clínicas in a condition considered serious. The second victim was conscious and alert after suffering open fractures of the tibia and fibula and was taken to Hospital São Paulo.

Firefighters stated that the structure accumulated water before collapsing. "The teams remained on site to complete the response and take the necessary measures."

The city woke up to rain after remaining on flood alert for part of the early morning hours. The CGE (Climate Emergency Management Center) issued the alert at 2:45 a.m. and lifted it at 5:09 a.m.

Shortly after, at 6:28 a.m., the agency reported that rain was continuing in a widespread pattern across the metropolitan region, with moderate intensity.

By early morning, firefighters had received three calls for fallen trees, one for a collapse or landslide, and another for flooding in the capital. One flooding point was recorded on Rua Jaraguá, in Bom Retiro, in the central region.

The rain also complicated traffic. Around 8 a.m., São Paulo recorded 900 km of gridlock, according to data from CET (Traffic Engineering Company).

The capital woke up to an average temperature of 16°C, and the forecast high for this Tuesday is 24°C. The forecast indicates more rain throughout the day, with the risk of storms, hail, and wind gusts exceeding 60 km/h.

A cold front is advancing toward the Southeast region after bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the states of the South. The system is being reinforced by a moisture channel coming from the north-central region, which increases the conditions for heavy and widespread rainfall.

The CGE warns of the risk of new flooding, overflow of rivers and streams, and fallen trees. Spring officially begins at 9:05 p.m. this Tuesday.

Rain is expected to continue on Wednesday (23), including during the early morning hours, and is forecast to gradually lose intensity only late at night.
