Mumbai: Finding her morphed image on
Instagram left a young college student from south Mumbai horrified. After she approached the Cyber Police and lodged a complaint, investigators found that the accused was a “peeping tom” who used to film women during his daily commute on the railways.
The 31-year-old man was arrested and produced before a magistrate court at Girgaum. The court sent him to police custody till Sunday.
Police said the case came to light only when the victim, who studies at a prestigious south Mumbai college, discovered her morphed image online. Investigators got her image removed but noticed that the Instagram page had numerous obscene images and videos of other women. The content was shot largely in local trains and at railway ticket booking offices. The accused also filmed some women walking on the street. Police officers will be getting the Instagram page blocked shortly.
The accused is a UP native and works in a tailoring shop. He lives in Virar and travels to work by train every day. Investigators found that he would board the general compartment located next to the ladies’ compartment. He would then peer into the ladies’ compartment through the partition and shoot inappropriate images and videos of women commuters, unknown to them.
Later, he morphed these with obscene content and posted them through a fake ID he had created on Instagram. Some of the posts have got close to 1 lakh views.
After receiving a complaint, the South Cyber Police analysed the fake ID and the mail linked to it. Under supervision of DCP Bajrang Bansode and senior inspector Nandkumar Gopale, the Cyber Police carried out a technical analysis and traced the accused.
Police will now investigate whether he was using the images for any commercial gain.
An FIR has been registered with the South Cyber Police.
Last year, a 54-year-old man was arrested by the Govt Railway Police (GRP) for filming an objectionable video of a woman commuter at Andheri railway station and making lewd remarks when she confronted him. The woman was waiting at the station to board a local train when the accused, Nasir Chaudhary, began filming her. He stopped filming when the train arrived. But a co-traveller saw him and alerted the complainant, who demanded he delete the video. An altercation ensued, during which he made lewd remarks at her. He was subsequently arrested.
