LONDON, September 28. /TASS/. The Iranian Embassy in the United Kingdom refutes British media reports claiming it was involved in plotting a terror attack near Fairford Air Base, which is used by the US Air Force.
"The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran to arrest of five suspects in the vicinity of RAF Fairford base," the embassy said in a statement posted on X.
The statement said that the spread of "such fabricated speculations" has only one purpose, "to fuel Iranophobia propaganda in the UK." In response, the diplomatic mission did not rule out taking "appropriate legal measures, as necessary, to safeguard the rights and interests of the country and its people."
On Sunday, five people were detained near Fairford Air Base in Gloucestershire in western England. They are suspected of violating the Explosives Act and Terrorism Act. The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command is investigating the case, while all five detainees, British citizens living in London, remain in custody.
President Donald Trump said that the United States had been conducting an investigation into those detained and that they intended to cause serious damage to the air base.
The suspects were initially detained on suspicion of violating the Explosives Act, but police later said that a suspected plan to carry out a terrorist attack had also been added to the charges.
