Gas fed into the network grew by 0.1 billion cubic metres (+0.5%) in the first six months of the year, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) up by 0.5 billion cubic metres (+5%), partly due to the entry into operation of the Ravenna regasification terminal. This is according to Polaris, Snam's new observatory on data, analysis and trends in the Italian energy system, updated monthly with quarterly in-depth reports in January, April, July and October.
According to data made available by Snam, the Hormuz crisis only affected the month of June, with LNG volumes transported by ship down by 0.6 billion cubic metres (-11%). Pipeline imports also declined, both over the half-year period, falling by 0.4 billion cubic metres (-2%), and in June, when the drop of 0.2 billion cubic metres (-23%) in arrivals from Passo Gries (Verbania) was only partially offset by an increase of 0.1 billion cubic metres in imports from Tarvisio.
According to Snam, there were no issues with the increase in demand, which was met through lower injections into storage sites. "The storage facilities themselves also closed the half-year period safely," Snam adds, "sitting at 67% of their filling level, just 4 percentage points below 2025 levels."
