CARACAS, October 29. /TASSp/. Venezuela’s authorized president Delcy Rodriguez has demanded the release of the Bolivarian republic’s gold from the Bank of England.
"I will not abandon the demand for the Bank of England to return our gold. Enough with their excuses. The National Assembly (Venezuela’s parliament - TASS) has reached an agreement with the opposition-led National Assembly (representing the 2015-elected legislature), in which Venezuela’s political forces demand the return of the gold to our country," Rodrigues said a Council of Ministers meeting that was broadcast by Venezolana de Television.
The authorized president has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prosecutor General’s Office to initiate steps toward recovering the gold reserves. The gold frozen in the vaults of the Bank of England belongs to the people of Venezuela and must be returned to the country, she emphasized.
The British central bank has withheld about 31 metric tons of Venezuelan gold, worth an estimated $4.8 billion. The conflict around the Venezuelan gold erupted in 2018-2019, when Britain, the United States and a number of other countries refused to recognize the legitimacy of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro.
