The Peace Lamp of Assisi makes a stop in Ancona, which joins the cities included in this "mapping that speaks of harmony, of peace, and above all that overcomes certain barriers, starting with schools. Because schools obviously need genuine, authentic integration, and not just numbers." These were the words of Ancona's mayor Daniele Silvetti, acting vice president of ANCI, during the event "Francesco and the Sea of Encounter," which celebrated Ancona's stage of the Tour of Italy for Peace with the passing of the Lamp in the presence of local authorities as well as approximately 500 students from five primary and secondary schools.
"Ancona is one of these stops," the mayor reiterated during the ceremony held on the Ancona port quay named after Saint Francis of Assisi, "we cared particularly about this tour, which places the city among those that engage in dialogue, seek peace, and have a precise duty to pass on to new generations the messages conveyed by a gesture that is symbolic but not entirely so. Ancona fully identifies with the message, especially by overcoming the language barriers and the great tensions that politics also fuels in some way."
The ceremony continued with a symbolic march by authorities and students toward the Teatro delle Muse, in Piazza della Repubblica, where a flash mob was held involving the young people with choreography and music "for peace and fraternity." The schools were presented with Sails for Peace crafted from reclaimed residual wood recovered from boats.
