Allegedly Russian Projectile: Missile in Polish Airspace Puts NATO on Alert
Following the impact of a missile in Poland, NATO has pledged its support to the country. Secretary General Rutte described it as yet another reckless act by Russia. The alliance had scrambled fighter jets in response.
The intrusion of an allegedly Russian cruise missile into Polish airspace has also put NATO on alert. Secretary General Mark Rutte announced, following a conversation with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, that the alliance stands in solidarity with Poland and will continue to strengthen its defensive readiness. He called the incident yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of the war against Ukraine.
The spokesman for NATO's military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, said the alliance is in close contact with Polish authorities regarding the violation of Polish airspace. Supreme Commander Alexus G. Grynkewich is also involved. He spoke with Polish Chief of General Staff Wiesław Kukuła and assured him that the military alliance would "continue to take all necessary steps to defend NATO territory."
According to the statements, both Poland and NATO activated air and ground defense capabilities in response to the missile's intrusion. Among the assets scrambled and deployed were two Polish F-16 fighter jets, a NATO Airbus A330 tanker aircraft, a Polish Saab 340 early warning aircraft, and a Polish Mi-24 helicopter.
Poland: Likely a Russian Cruise Missile
The projectile struck in an uninhabited area in the east of the country. Polish authorities discovered a ten-meter-wide crater at the site. Residents had previously heard a loud explosion. According to police, the impact site is approximately 80 to 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
According to Prime Minister Tusk, it was most likely a Russian Ch-101 cruise missile — a conclusion suggested by the debris found at the scene. Tusk described it as a "very serious" incident, but stressed there was "absolutely no reason to believe that Poland was the target."
He further stated that Polish air defenses would have shot down the missile had it deviated from its flight path and headed toward populated areas. In addition to the cruise missile, another "object" had entered Polish airspace near the border but caused no damage.
Merz Accuses Russia of Recklessness
According to the NATO spokesman, the missile was one of many that Russia had fired at Ukraine overnight. He declined to comment on the type.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the incident in a social media post as an "unacceptable violation" of EU airspace. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) accused Russia of "recklessness."
