Former councilwoman Patrícia Poncini, from Boituva, died on Thursday (17) after being stabbed at the headquarters of SOS (Social Works Service), a non-governmental organization she presided over in Boituva, in the interior of São Paulo.
She and SOS coordinator Andrea Bento were attacked by a contracted employee. Teams from SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) and the Fire Department came to their aid and attempted to resuscitate the president.
Patrícia did not survive, and Andrea is recovering at Hospital São Luiz in a condition considered stable.
The attack occurred on Thursday morning. After fleeing the scene, the suspect contacted the Boituva Civil Military Guard and turned himself in on a highway leading to Sorocaba.
Patrícia served as a councilwoman for two terms, from 2000 to 2004 and from 2005 to 2008, with the PMDB party.
A teacher in the municipal school system, she served as principal at early childhood and elementary schools. As a legislator, she championed causes related to education and women's health.
"In the face of the brutality of this crime, we expect a rigorous investigation and that the perpetrator be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Violence against women cannot be tolerated or go unpunished," the City Council's leadership said in a statement.
The Boituva city government declared three days of official mourning.
"She was a woman with a history of work and dedication to our city, whose departure, in such a violent manner, causes indignation and a pain that is difficult to express," said Mayor Edson Marcusso (PSD).
