He attempted to kidnap a child who was walking with his aunt in Tor Sapienza, a neighbourhood on the eastern outskirts of Rome, but the woman's prompt reaction foiled his plan. Four days later, the child's father, to whom his sister had given a detailed description of the man, recognised the alleged perpetrator on the street and called the police. The man, a 47-year-old of Nigerian origin, was placed under arrest on suspicion of aggravated attempted kidnapping and is now in custody. The man — who had entered Italy irregularly and had no fixed abode — when he realised that the child's father had called the police, attempted to flee by boarding a bus, but was intercepted and stopped by officers from the 5th Prenestino district.
