Sunday will bring thunderstorms to Central and Northern Italy due to the passage of a storm front moving down from Northern Europe, while the South will see sunny conditions except in Campania. A rise in temperatures is expected for next week, with the "fourth heatwave of the summer." This is indicated by forecasts from Mattia Gussoni, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it.
The thunderstorms are being caused by the interaction between unstable air currents and the very hot, humid air masses that have been sitting over the Mediterranean after weeks of temperatures consistently above seasonal averages. The areas most at risk of heavy rainfall are Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, eastern Liguria, northern Tuscany and Lazio.
Already by Monday, a different situation is expected, with the advance of a vast high-pressure system of subtropical origin that will push northward from North Africa toward Europe and which, Gussoni notes, will give rise to the fourth heatwave of the summer of 2026. Extreme atmospheric stability is forecast, with sunshine dominating across almost all regions and a marked, widespread rise in temperatures, "with values once again reaching peaks of up to 38-40°C in many cities across Central and Northern Italy."

Sunday the 26th: in the North, a weather disturbance with thunderstorms moving from West to East; in the Centre, locally very strong thunderstorms with hail; in the South, sunny except for showers in Campania.
Monday the 27th: in the North, sunny; in the Centre, final thunderstorms followed by improvement; in the South, scattered thunderstorms, at times intense.
Tuesday the 28th: in the North, sunshine everywhere, rising temperatures; in the Centre, sunny across all areas; in the South, sunny and warmer, with thunderstorms around the Palermo and Trapani areas.
