THE MATCH

Lazio win 2-0 in Venice and join Roma and Inter at the top of the table with 13 points from five games: a penalty by Zaccagni and a header from Noslin at the start of the second half prove enough. Gattuso's side leave the Penzo in good spirits, while Venice remain rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points after three home defeats and two away. At the final whistle and as the players left the pitch, Stroppa's team were roundly booed by their own fans; within the club, the international break will be a time for reflection.

The first goalscoring opportunity of the match is a free kick struck by Zaccagni in the 4th minute, a few centimetres from the post to Stankovic's left. Lazio remain in Venice's half until the 9th minute, when Adams tries his luck from 25 metres with an ambitious shot that Mandas gathers without difficulty. From that point on, however, Venice begin to make repeated forays towards Mandas's goal. In the 15th minute, Correia enters the penalty area but is brought down by Mandas in a late challenge, and it is a penalty. Yeboah steps up to take it, after a dispute with Adams: his run-up is short, the left-footed cross shot is at half height, the strike is weak, and Mandas dives the right way to deflect it easily into a corner.

In the 25th minute, another corner for Venice. From the resulting play, Sohm unleashes a powerful volley from outside the box, but once again finds Mandas ready. Stroppa's side appear to have lowered their usual defensive line in order to be more dangerous on the counter-attack. Indeed, in the 33rd minute, an intelligent through ball from Yeboah puts Adams in a highly favourable position in front of Montipò, but the Nigerian striker clumsily attempts to place his shot, making it easy for the opposing goalkeeper to deflect it into a corner. In the 37th minute, another counter-attack from the hosts, with Hainaut pushing forward down the right flank and shooting towards the far post, forcing Mandas to parry the ball back to Adams, who is uncoordinated and sends his shot high and wide, the ball ending up in the upper right corner of the Groppello stand.

The final scare of the first half comes from a powerful long-range shot by Cancellieri which, in the 42nd minute, trickles out for a goal kick. The second half resumes with Yeboah bringing down Taylor in the 3rd minute with a foul from behind. It is a penalty for Lazio, and Zaccagni makes no mistake from the spot. A right-footed cross shot, Stankovic guesses correctly but the ball ends up in the net beneath the orange, black and green end. Venice feel the blow and in the 10th minute it is Belahyane who comes close to scoring with a placed shot from outside the area that goes just wide, but the Lazio double does not take long to materialise: in the 15th minute, Tavares's cross from the left is met by Noslin's header, which beats Stankovic and finds the net. Tempers begin to fray in the Venice camp, with three more bookings in the final two minutes. Stroppa's substitutions fail to change the match: the hosts sink further without a point, and their fans are far from impressed.
