Frankfurt am Main: Person who contracted malaria dies
In Frankfurt am Main, a person who had contracted malaria has died. According to the health authority, they and another infected person had lived near the airport. Neither of them had previously travelled to a malaria-endemic area.
Following the emergence of two new malaria cases in Frankfurt, one of the two infected persons has died. The city's health authority announced this on Thursday.
The deceased is one of the two individuals from the Schwanheim district who lived in the immediate vicinity of Frankfurt Airport. On Tuesday, the city had reported two malaria cases in the district. Neither of the individuals had previously travelled to a malaria-endemic area nor worked at the airport.
No further cases reported so far
As the health authority further announced, no additional malaria cases in Frankfurt have been reported since the beginning of the week. Nevertheless, the authority called on residents and workers in the vicinity of the airport to remain particularly vigilant: those experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice and mention their place of residence.
According to the health authority, doctors should consider a possible malaria infection in patients presenting with unexplained fever in Frankfurt. This applies in particular to people who live or work near the airport.
Third malaria death in Frankfurt
This means that three people in Frankfurt have now died following a malaria infection this year. During the summer, six employees of airport operator Fraport had become infected with the disease, and two died.
