Two among 5 critically injured after MSRTC bus rams into 5 vehicles causing pile-up on Sion-Panvel highway in Maharashtra

Navi Mumbai: Five persons were injured in a pile-up on the Sion-Panvel highway after an

MSRTC bus ferrying passengers from Mumbai Central towards Murud in Raigad rammed into five vehicles including three auto rickshaws and two cars near Belapur flyover on Sunday around 5.45 pm.

Out of the five injured persons, two auto drivers are reportedly critical. All injured persons have been admitted to MGM hospital, CBD-Belapur, said the police.

Lakhan Raskar, police inspector (crime) of CBD-Belapur police station, said that the MSRTC bus was ferrying 10 passengers towards Murud. Upon reaching the stretch of highway between Belapur khind (hill pass) and Belapur flyover, the bus driver lost control over the wheels reportedly due to brake failure and crashed into two cars and three auto rickshaws moving ahead. The bus halted only after one of the auto rickshaws, after being rammed into by the bus, crashed into a moving truck ahead and the pathway got blocked.

Raskar said, “The five injured persons include two auto rickshaw drivers, who are reportedly critical, and three passengers in those autos. The injured passengers include a man, a woman and a teenage boy, who are out of danger. Those in the two cars and the third auto driver escaped unhurt.

But all five vehicles were severely mangled in the mishap. The 10 passengers in the bus were also not hurt and they later travelled to their respective destinations in another MSRTC bus. The MSRTC bus driver was identified as Sachin Tekam (35). Prima facie, he was not under the influence of alcohol. However, his medical test will be conducted at NMMC hospital, Vashi. Accordingly, an FIR will be registered against him under relevant sections of BNS and Motor Vehicle Act.”
