The search continues for the 45-year-old Dutch tourist who yesterday at around 12:30 plunged into the waters of Lake Como off Menaggio, where he had dived from the boat he had rented in order to help his 16-year-old son who was in difficulty. The son was saved, but the father disappeared. Searches in the area by the coast guard and fire brigade got underway immediately. Fire brigade divers are on the scene, supported by nautical vessels and specialist personnel.
Coast guard patrol boats resumed the search at dawn, after it had been interrupted by the arrival of a storm yesterday. Divers from the Coast Guard's 5th Sub Unit are also arriving from Genoa for deep-water searches, which will be carried out using ROVs and sonar to cover depths beyond fifty metres. The 45-year-old Dutchman did indeed sink at a point where the depth of the lake bed rapidly drops from 25 to over 100 metres.
To ensure the safety of deep-water operations, naval units from the coast guard, police (the Inland Waters team of the Como Police Headquarters) and the Guardia di Finanza will take turns throughout the day.
