Tanino Liberatore, one of the most visionary artists in contemporary Italian and European comics, has created the visual image for the Bologna Jazz Festival 2026. The artist will be a guest of the festival on October 19 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna for a public event, organized in collaboration with the Accademia and the Hamelin association. Liberatore's participation continues a project launched by the Bologna Jazz Festival in 2013, when each edition began entrusting its visual identity to a prominent illustrator, invited to interpret the world of jazz through an original work.
Having begun his artistic career in the world of comics, Liberatore is internationally known above all for Ranxerox, the character he created in 1978 together with Stefano Tamburini in the pages of the magazine Cannibale. The artist's style, characterized by great anatomical precision and an immediately recognizable line, earned him the celebrated nickname "Michelangelo of Comics," bestowed upon him by Frank Zappa, for whom Liberatore created the cover of the 1983 album The Man from Utopia. One of the founders of Frigidaire, since 1982 Liberatore has lived and worked in France, where he has developed an intense career as an illustrator, painter and artist. He has also worked in cinema, contributing among other things to set design and costumes. In 1985, Andrea Pazienza in turn made him a comics character in the story La leggenda di Italianino Liberatore. The BJF 2026 will feature approximately 70 concerts, from October 13 to November 8, including performances by Fabrizio Bosso on October 16, Al Di Meola on October 28, Kurt Elling with the Yellowjackets on November 3, and Emmet Cohen on November 6.
