Mirello Crisafulli, the first communist mayor of Italy's highest provincial capital, brings the Resistance back to Enna. He does so with a series of initiatives that will culminate, half an hour before midnight, with an "antifascist" pasta dish. The day will unfold between the dedication of squares to partisans and the presentation of a plaque named after the carabiniere who arrested Mussolini.
In Piazza VI Dicembre, at 11:30 p.m., there will be the 'Resistance spaghetti dinner', in memory of the Cervi brothers who on July 25, 1943 distributed pasta to the population of Campegine to celebrate the fall of Mussolini, a gesture that has become a national event of antifascist remembrance which Enna chooses to embrace, in collaboration with the local Anpi chapter chaired by Renzo Pintus.
An event strongly championed by the 'Red Baron', as Mayor Wladimiro Crisafulli is known, who has always served in the ranks of the left, from the Communist Party, and was elected mayor without the PD symbol. "In Enna, the Democratic Party is me," he had said before the vote.
Today also marks the anniversary of Mussolini's arrest, which in 1943 signalled the fall of fascism. It was carabinieri captain Paolo Vigneri, born in Calascibetta, a town in the province of Enna, who physically arrested the Duce, later joining the Caruso partisan band. The mayor and the municipal council will present a commemorative plaque to his son, notary Giovanni Vigneri.
This morning, meanwhile, the former Piazza Antonello da Messina, at the Sant'Anna crossroads, was dedicated to Pompeo Colajanni, known as Commander Barbato, a key figure of the Resistance connected to Enna through family roots and political commitment, while a stretch of Via Leonardo da Vinci, also in lower Enna, will be dedicated to knight and engineer Alessandro Scelfo, among the most distinguished citizens of Enna.
"We want to remember," explained Mayor Crisafulli, "the history of our partisans, of those who served in institutions and of those who built and worked for their city. In this way we recover a more complete idea of community, giving value to memory and to shared moments, such as the 'antifascist pasta', in memory of the Cervi brothers and of freedom."
