The Federal Highway Police and the Federal Revenue Service found two tonnes of marijuana hidden among a load of cabbages on highway BR-280, in Rio Negrinho (SC).
The bust occurred on Wednesday (16) during a joint operation by the two agencies.
According to police, when approached, the truck driver presented documents regarding the transport of vegetables from Foz do Iguaçu (PR) to Florianópolis (SC).
In the cargo compartment, however, the team noticed that the vegetables appeared aged and were stored in a manner unsuitable for consumption.
The load became suspected and agents carried out a detailed inspection of the trailer, where they found the drugs. The two tonnes of marijuana were hidden among the boxes of cabbages, in 2,739 blocks.
According to the Federal Highway Police, this was one of the largest drug seizures of the year in Santa Catarina.
The truck driver was arrested and taken to the Civil Police station in São Bento do Sul. Officers say he was to receive R$ 15,000 to deliver the marijuana in Florianópolis.
The suspect will face drug trafficking charges, carrying a sentence of five to 15 years in prison if convicted.
