"I apologize if people felt offended by what I said, but I never intended to offend women, I have never done so in my life, neither in my private life nor in my public life." This was stated by Antonio Tajani in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, following the controversy of recent days over remarks he made at the 'Itaca' event in Formello.
"I'll give one example for all, precisely in defense of women's rights I appointed and wanted to appoint two women as ambassadors to Iran and Afghanistan, to send a very clear signal that women's rights cannot be trampled upon anywhere in the world. This is one example, I could give 100 more," he added.
What Tajani had said
From the stage of the event organized by Giuseppe Cangemi, Tajani had stated: "If I were to give advice to my son who asks me 'what kind of girl should I marry? Maybe an attractive girl?' Yes, of course, it's nice to marry an attractive girl. But what is her character like? Well, you know, she's changed several boyfriends, she dumped her boyfriend, she left, she's inclined to fool around... And then there's a less showy girl but more reliable, more serious, who will be a good mother and family woman, who will honor the love she confirms through marriage, and so I would tell my son: choose the second one..."
