"Knowledge and study are important in life. Not abstract knowledge, or merely abstract knowledge. But knowledge that is combined with friendship, with care for those around us, with responsibility towards others. This is the path to freedom. Our freedom is authentic only if freedom exists for everyone. We must be masters of our own time. 'There is a close connection' - these are the words of the writer Milan Kundera - 'between slowness and memory, between speed and forgetting'. What is acquired without the rush of haste remains imprinted in a person's memory; what is taken in haste is easily forgotten. Speed seems to have become an existential condition. School must instead remain a space of balance where the aim is not slowness but solidity and, therefore, the integral development of the person. Dear girls and boys, you are the future. You already are today. You must, at the same time, build it and inhabit it." This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the school year at the "Sergio Marchionne" All-Inclusive Institute, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the earthquake.
