"We are not facing an inevitable fatality, but a tragedy that calls for specific public responsibilities." This is the statement made by the general secretary of Flai Cgil Piemonte, Denis Vayr, regarding the death of a 44-year-old Pakistani agricultural worker who was struck while cycling home from work along provincial road 662 in Lagnasco, in the Saluzzo area.
The union, which today organised a sit-in at the site of the accident, is calling on the Region, Province, Municipalities and Prefecture to take urgent action to ensure the safety of workers' movements. "Safe mobility," Vayr states, "must become a concrete priority, supported by resources, clear timelines and verifiable interventions."
"Every worker," adds Matteo Bellegoni, head of migration policies and legality at Flai Cgil national, "must have the right to leave home and return safely."
The union highlights the critical issues affecting the road network of a territory with a strong agricultural vocation, where the presence of heavy vehicles intersects with bicycle traffic. Among the demands are protected routes for two-wheeled vehicles and interventions on the most dangerous stretches.
