For the first time in the world, a complete transplant of the anterior segment of the eye and the central part of the retina (the macula) from one eye to another has been successfully performed on a patient. The woman has thus recovered her sight after more than five years of total blindness. "Until now, the simultaneous transplant of the anterior segment had been performed only once in the world by Professor Vincenzo Sarnicola and myself, here at Molinette. It had never been possible to transplant the central area of the retina," explains Professor Michele Reibaldi, who leads the team at the University Eye Clinic of the Molinette hospital.
