He dived in when he saw his son struggling in the water — a 45-year-old Dutch tourist who sank into Lake Como shortly after half past noon near Menaggio and is now being searched for by the coast guard and fire brigade.
According to initial information provided by the coast guard, the man dived from the rented boat, where his other two children were, because he saw his sixteen-year-old in difficulty.
At that point, the boat drifted away. The two tried to reach it. The son was helped by a person who was on a stand-up paddleboard, while the father sank beneath the surface.
Several reports were made to emergency services. The coast guard and Menaggio fire brigade responded to the scene, along with the Como water rescue fire brigade, the Dongo fire brigade with a support boat, and fire brigade divers who arrived by helicopter from Malpensa, while additional specialist divers are on their way from Turin.
