A bus fell off an embankment approximately 15 meters high on Sunday morning (20), on Doutor Avelino Júnior highway, in Cruzeiro, in the interior of São Paulo. Five people died in the accident.
According to the Fire Department, 48 people were on board. In addition to the five fatalities, another 40 passengers were injured and were taken to hospitals in the region.
Also according to firefighters, the bus was traveling from Ipatinga, in Minas Gerais, headed to Aparecida. The driver lost control of the vehicle at around 5:30 a.m. and fell off the embankment.
The driver underwent a breathalyzer test, which returned a negative result for the presence of alcohol. He was also injured and was taken to an emergency room in Lorena.
The most seriously injured victims are being taken to the Santa Casa de Cruzeiro. In total, approximately 40 people sustained injuries and received medical assistance.
Fire Department teams from Cruzeiro, Cachoeira Paulista, Lorena, and Guaratinguetá were mobilized for the rescue operation. Until late Sunday morning, firefighters remained on the scene to assist the victims.
