"We have an association treaty with Israel. In that association treaty, Article 2 states that a condition of its application is the respect for human rights. Now I believe that not even Meloni can argue that Netanyahu respects human rights. And so, if that is not the case, the suspension of that treaty would be automatic. Europe is not doing so, thus violating its own treaties." This was stated by former Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema, president of the Italianieuropei foundation, at the panel 'Global Crisis and New Opportunities', organized by the Bari Chamber of Commerce as part of the Giornate del Mezzogiorno at the 89th Fiera del Levante.
"When I see Europe remaining silent in the face of the massacre of civilian populations in Gaza, denying its founding values, I ask myself how we can go out into the world and preach human rights while applying double standards," he added.
"How can anyone around the world believe us? Where is our heritage, our coherence, our ethics?" he concluded. "If we want the crisis of the West — in terms of power and economy — not to result in the erasure of our values of freedom and democracy, which are the heritage that we Westerners should pass on to the world, we must start by respecting these principles ourselves."
