A woman was struck by a car travelling at high speed while crossing at a pedestrian crossing and subsequently died in hospital from the extremely serious injuries sustained in the impact. The driver, who did not stop to render assistance and instead fled the scene, was later traced by police.
The incident occurred in Pompeii during the night between Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 September. The news was reported by AVS MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who came into possession of footage from a surveillance camera system.
According to the reconstruction of events, the woman, who was accompanied by her husband, was crossing the road on via Plinio at a pedestrian crossing when she was struck by the hit-and-run vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition and subsequently died, while police officers later identified the alleged perpetrator and the vehicle approximately two kilometres from the scene of the impact. According to information obtained, the car showed damage consistent with having struck a pedestrian.
"Whatever happened to humanity?" AVS MP Borrelli asked on his social media profiles. "Stopping after an accident and offering assistance should be an elementary act of civilised behaviour, even before being a legal obligation," the MP continued. "For years we have been highlighting a genuine emergency on our roads. Too many car and motorcycle drivers continue to behave as if they were on a racetrack, putting others' lives at risk. We cannot limit ourselves to repainting the crossing markings after every tragedy. We need checks, speed monitoring, effective penalties and a culture of respect for human life. Road safety cannot be left to chance. The life of a pedestrian must be worth more than the haste of those behind the wheel."
