A theatrical show at Palazzo Altemps, a lyric Recital at the Baths of Diocletian, historical re-enactments and educational tours. The Museo Nazionale Romano is taking part with a rich programme in the European Heritage Days – the largest European cultural event promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture – taking place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September at the venues of the Baths of Diocletian, Palazzo Massimo and Palazzo Altemps. This year's theme is "Protecting Heritage. Renewing, Resisting, Reinventing": an invitation to reflect on the challenges facing cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, and on the shared responsibility of ensuring its care, enhancement and transmission to future generations.
For the occasion, on the evening of Saturday 26 September the venues of the Museo Nazionale Romano will extend their opening hours until 22.30 (last entry at 22.00) with a special evening ticket of 1 euro, which grants access to two significant performance events. At 20.30, in the monumental courtyard of Palazzo Altemps, the absolute world premiere of the theatrical show "Saggezza – Figure antiche per il mondo futuro" (Wisdom – Ancient Figures for the Future World) will take place, written by Sergio Basile, directed by Yuri Napoli and produced by Imprenditori di Sogni, which has received the High Cultural Patronage of the European Parliament and won the Special Theatre Projects call issued by the Ministry of Culture. The text is inspired by Michel Onfray's essay "Wisdom. Knowing How to Live at the Foot of a Volcano," in which the French philosopher looks to the protagonists of ancient Rome as concrete examples of a philosophy capable of transforming itself into behaviour, choice, discipline and a way of life.
At 20.00, music will take centre stage inside the Baths of Diocletian, where the lyric Recital by "Fabbrica" Young Artist Program of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma will be performed (subject to availability).
Also on Saturday 26 September, various activities will take place at all venues open to the public: at the Baths of Diocletian from 10.00 to 18.00, the historical re-enactment "At the Court of Maximian and Rome: the Emperor's Return." Educational tours are then offered at 19.00 and 21.00, also inside the Baths of Diocletian, and at 20.00 at Palazzo Massimo, while at Palazzo Altemps, as part of the initiative "At the Museum… between wellbeing, art and culture," at 10.30 a special visit and Dance Well will take place – an artistic practice that promotes dance in museum settings, for people with Parkinson's disease.
The European Heritage Days will continue on Sunday 27 September with guided tours of the ongoing exhibitions at the Palazzo Altemps venues, where at 16.00, for the finissage of the contemporary art exhibition "Mircea Cantor. Constellations of the Ancient," co-curator Pier Paolo Pancotto will lead the public on a journey through the works of the Romanian artist. In the Octagonal Hall of the Baths of Diocletian – Museo dell'Arte Salvata, also at 16.00, co-curator Elisabetta Bruscolini will guide visitors in the discovery of a lesser-known Egypt, that of the oases of the western desert.
