A 22-year-old girl who fell from the window of her room at the school for inspectors and superintendents of the Guardia di Finanza in Coppito, a district of L'Aquila, died during the night following the accident that occurred yesterday afternoon. The young woman's condition had appeared desperate from the outset. Doctors at the San Salvatore hospital in the Abruzzo regional capital made futile attempts to save her. The student had undergone surgery for severe trauma to the head and pelvis.
The girl fell at least 12 metres, and the tremendous impact meant her condition appeared extremely serious immediately. The 22-year-old, in her first year of studies at the Guardia di Finanza inspectors' school in Coppito, a district of the municipality of L'Aquila, fell from the window of her room located on the third floor of one of the many buildings in the complex, which in 2009 served as the operational headquarters for post-earthquake relief efforts.
The young woman was admitted in critical condition to the San Salvatore hospital, where she underwent surgery for severe trauma to the head and pelvis. A deliberate act has not been ruled out. The girl was a student marshal who had been attending the school for a year and had recently received the traditional presentation of the flames, which is equivalent to achieving the status of student finance marshal.
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m., and emergency services and law enforcement arrived promptly at the scene. The hundreds of students in training at the facility are in a state of shock. In this regard, it has been learned that the large celebration scheduled for next Monday for the finance officers in their third year who will be leaving the school is now at risk of being cancelled.
